Do you ever feel like you spend your days simply trying to keep your head above water, only to do it all over again the next day?
Don’t let the beauty of this aqua-blue water fool you. This is a photo of me trying to get back to a boat as the current was swiftly pulling me away. Now, I knew I could have floated until I hit the land in the background (I’m good at floating, not so good at swimming). Or a savior in the boat could have pulled up anchor and retrieved me. So technically, I knew I’d be OK and wouldn’t drown….but in this photo, I’m trying my best to keep my head above water and get back to the boat. At one point I inquired “AM I EVEN MOVING?!” as I felt my efforts were negated by the strong pull of the current.
Eventually, I made it back to the boat. Exhausted, a little embarrassed, and relieved. Once I returned to work from this amazing vacation in the Caribbean (the rest of it was drama-free), I had a realization. Although there was no chance of me actually drowning – the sensation I had in that water was what I was feeling day after day. I was spending my time trying to keep my head above water, to not drown in emails and meetings, and “fire drills” – etc, etc. I’d go home feeling somewhat accomplished “I MADE IT!” – only to be thrown back into the water the next day.
The sensation of fighting to stay afloat amidst a sea of responsibilities comes up often with my coaching clients. Just like in that moment when I questioned if I was making progress, there are times when it feels like the relentless tide of demands is sweeping away our efforts while we remain stagnant. A coach can support you in prioritizing what’s on your plate, cheer you on when you get tired, celebrate how far you’ve come, and offer you space to pause and reflect (and possibly change tactics!).
